What is pumpkin better than sex cake, you ask? It's a rich cake, soaked in sweet milk, topped with Cool Whip, toffee, and caramel. A make-ahead fall dessert everyone craves.

You know the season's changing when you start seeing pumpkins everywhere, and that's when I start craving this pumpkin better than sex cake. This is one of those cakes my friends and I used to giggle about because of the ridiculous name, but when I finally tried it, it actually lives up to what it promises. The layers of rich pumpkin cake soaked in sweetened condensed milk with that fluffy topping and crunchy toffee bits create something that's honestly addicting

I did a little research and found out this cake goes by plenty of names like "Robert Redford Cake" or "The Next Best Thing to Robert Redford." Apparently it's a really old recipe that got named after the actor, because it's supposed to be as irresistible as he was considered to be. Whether you believe that comparison or not, this cake definitely earned its reputation for being over-the-top delicious.

What makes this cake a fall coffee shop staple along with pumpkin pie or other pumpkin pie spice goodies is how the sweetened condensed milk soaks into every poke hole you make, creating this dense, custard-like layer that contrasts with the light Cool Whip topping. I call it my Pumpkin Poke Cake to the kids, because that name is much more PC.

The Heath toffee bits add this buttery crunch that makes every bite more interesting, while the caramel drizzle ties everything together with smooth sweetness. It's become my go-to fall dessert because it's make-ahead friendly and disappears faster than any other cake I bring to get togethers.

It's so simple yet so decadent. I basically just mix pumpkin with cake mix, poke holes, and layer on the good stuff. But the end result tastes like you spent hours creating some fancy bakery dessert, which is probably why it's maintained its popularity for decades.

Ingredients

Bowls of flour, yogurt, pumpkin puree, condensed milk, peanut butter, and chopped nuts on a marble surface—perfect for whipping up a decadent pumpkin better than sex cake.

The pumpkin puree creates this dense, moist base with rich fall flavor. Yellow cake mix bakes up soft and fluffy while soaking up all the creamy layers you add on top.

Sweetened condensed milk seeps into the warm cake and creates this smooth, custard-like texture that makes every bite incredibly rich. Cool Whip adds light, airy contrast to balance all the dense sweetness underneath.

Then the Heath toffee bits bring buttery, crunchy texture, while caramel sauce drizzled on top adds smooth, silky sweetness that ties everything together.

To store pumpkin better than sex cake, cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap or transfer leftovers to an airtight container. Keep refrigerated for up to 4 days. This dessert doesn’t freeze well since the topping and caramel can separate, so it’s best enjoyed fresh or within a few days.

Top Tips for Pumpkin Better Than Sex Cake

Chill for best results: Refrigerate the cake for at least 2–4 hours, or even overnight, to let the filling soak in and the flavors come together.

Speed it up: If you’re short on time, place the cake in the freezer for about 1 hour to set before serving.

No wooden spoon? No problem: Use a fork or even a drinking straw to poke holes in the cake so the filling can seep through.
